2024 Professor Yu-chi Sung Honored with FEIAP Engineering Medal
Light of Engineering in Taiwan! Engineering Institutes Of Asia and Pacific (FEIAP) announced today that Yu-chi Sung, Distinguished Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering at Taipei Tech, has been awarded the 113th FEIAP "Engineering Medal" for his work in bridge engineering, seismic resistance of buildings, structural analysis, and off-shore wind power engineering, which is a model of engineering with both originality and foresight, as well as the "Engineering Thesis Award" for the same year. This is the second time for Sung to receive this honor after he was awarded "Fellow", the highest honor for FEIAP members in 112.
Yu-chi Sung is the first professor of Taipei Tech to receive the "Fellowship" and "Engineering Medal" from the FEIAP. He used to work as an engineer in an engineering consulting firm, and has been a member of PCC for many years, as well as the head of NCREE, assisting in the national review of major engineering projects and solving engineering disaster problems. He has received more than 20 special honors and paper awards, including the Tung-Yen Lin Paper Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2019, which was established more than half a century ago and is the only Chinese team to have received the award; the Outstanding Contribution to Civil Engineering Education Award from the Chinese Union of Professional Civil Engineers Associations in 2022; and the National Award for Distinguished Contribution to Industry-Academia Cooperation from the Ministry of Education in 2023, and so on.
Mr. Sung thanked FEIAP for the recognition and said, "The world has embraced artificial intelligence (AI), and we need to change our mindset," he said.We need to change our way of thinking," he said. "We need to make good use of new technologies and tools in the field of engineering, in practical work, and in the way we teach in schools, so we can't be stuck in the same old rut. The Taipei Tech team he leads has combined AI with the "Detailed Preliminary Seismic Evaluation System for Reinforced Concrete Buildings" (PSERCB), which has accumulated more than 20,000 preliminary evaluation cases, and based on the tax data of Taipei City and New Taipei City, the team was able to intelligently compare them to estimate the seismic capacity of hundreds of thousands of buildings that have not been evaluated at the preliminary level, which is a very effective result.
The FEIAP recognizes members who have made special contributions to engineering academics or engineering technology by awarding them the "Engineering Medal". Since its inception 25 years ago, a total of 76 awards have been given, with one person nominated and recommended in accordance with the regulations, which is a very serious matter. Past recipients of the award include: former Executive Yuan President Yun-Hsuan Sun, former Minister of Economic Affairs Yao-Dong Chao, semiconductor industry pioneer Ding-Hua Hu, and IT godfather Chen-Jung Shih, among others, who have been instrumental in promoting Taiwan's economic development.
To recognize outstanding contributions to various engineering fields in Taiwan, the FEIAP awards "Fellow" certificates. Since the first selection in 106 years, a total of 42 people have been awarded this honor, including: Chairman of Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy Yu-Hsin Chien , Former Chairman of Taiwan High Speed Rail Chin-der Ou, Chairman of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) Chih-Kung Lee, Former Chairman of Taipower Yang Wei-Fu, Chairman of CECI, Yi-Fang Shih, and so on.
