Technology Overview
DART will run on a 350-m-long viaduct from the Luton Airport Parkway station before transitioning to the Gateway Bridge. EMR will introduce the new service as part of the May timetable change, and it is the first significant step toward a separately branded “Luton Airport Express” service.
Applications & Benefits
The last mile between the Luton Airport Parkway station and the airport will be significantly enhanced by the construction of Direct Air-Rail Transit service. The new fleet procurement process was launched in February 2019 to meet rider ship growth and the planned mid life over haulofthe existing fleet. Each trainset consists of seven cars as opposed to the current five or six, providing greater onboard capacity. EMUs accelerate and decelerate faster than current diesel trains pulled by locomotives, as eight motors are distributed throughout the trainset. These electric motors also generate less noise than their diesel equivalent, making the trip more enjoyable for both riders and residents who live near Caltrain tracks.
