The 21^st “Yu Ziang Science and Technology Award” was held on September 6, 2023 at the Shangri-La Far Eastern Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan. Professor Shiao-Shing, Chen, Distinguished Professor of the Institute of Environmental Engineering and Management, was honored to receive the Yu-Ziang Science Thesis Award for the category of Green Technology.

According to Shiao-Shing, Chen, the award-winning study utilized an anaerobic osmosis membrane bioreactor (AnOMBR) system using MgSO₄ as the driving solution to treat low concentration (100 - 200 mg/L) of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) feasibility and regenerate the treated water, to investigate the treatment efficiency of TMAH as well as nutrient salt retention efficiency. Since the biotank is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium, the pH adjustment of the MF filtrate was used for phosphorus recovery, and a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) system was used for recovery and reuse of the drive solution.

The results of the study showed that TMAH could be effectively removed by AnOMBR; Phosphate and ammonium were accumulated in the biotanks by the precipitation of guano and the conversion of organic nitrogen to ammonium in the anaerobic tanks, which resulted in the biotanks being maintained at a lower salinity and higher water flux, and the content of methanogens and methane gas was increased as a result.

The “Yu-Ziang Technology Award” was established by Far Eastern Group in memory of its founder, Mr. Yu-Ziang Hsu, to honor his spirit of innovation and dedication to the society, with a special focus on encouraging emerging key technologies including nanotechnology, information communication, optoelectronics, biomedical science, green technology, and artificial intelligence, and to enhance the visibility of research in these fields. It is hoped that the award will enhance the visibility of research in these fields, showcase Taiwan's abundant research achievements through the selection of the award, and encourage more scholars to devote themselves to the award, as well as promote the development of related industries to a higher level.
