Taipei Tech and Taiwan Rolling Stock Co. (TRSC) have signed an agreement and launched a new joint research center on March 17 to collaborate on talent cultivation and smart railway technology advancement. Guests present at the signing and launching ceremony included Tsai Huang-liang, Chairman of TRSC, Hsu Shun-jung, General Manager of TRSC, Hu Hsiang-ling, Political Deputy Minister of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), Ho Nuan-hsuan, Chairman of Chung-Hwa Railway Industry Development Association, Yang Zheng-jun, Deputy Director of Railway Bureau, MOTC, Feng Hui-sheng, Deputy Director of Taiwan Railways Administration, and Sun Guo-hua, VP of China Steel Corporation.

Tsai Huang-liang, Chairman of TRSC, indicated that the partnership between Taipei Tech and TRSC will greatly contribute to the local railway industry. “The new research center will focus on industry-academia cooperation and talent cultivation,” said Tsai, “students will gain hands-on experiences and practical skills through the collaboration projects”.

Wang Sea-fue, Taipei Tech President, noted that the new Joint Research Center for Railway Vehicle and Smart Technology will be located at the new Taipei Tech Pioneer International R&D Building. “We will develop smart application and solution for multi-track vehicles, including Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS), to boost the efficiency of train dispatching and repair,” said Wang.

Yao Leehter, Director of the joint research center, indicated that the TCMS can be viewed as the brain and central nervous system of a train. “It controls and monitors a list of train equipment, functional processes and operating systems,” said Yao. “The center is now working on designing a risk preventive and maintenance platform for the TCMS that can detect passenger flow, circuit malfunction and abnormal vibration, which will provide a more intelligent solution for a smarter railway system”.
